Holi: Celebration of Cultural Diversity Through Water Balloons and Mud Wrestling

This weekend is pretty much Multicultural Weekend at my college, when all the cultural groups around campus host special events to entice pre-frosh, or rising freshmen. Unfortunately, the university cut their playtime short, so all the clubs decided to have our Multicultural bash a week later.

This is what college kids do when finals approach. We all gather in The Swamp (huge grassy area between the dorms), spray the ground until it's muddy, line up over a thousand water balloons in large garbage bags, and after a long countdown from 30, we WATER BALLOON FIGHT!

:D Except after the water balloons are all used up, people resort to mud wrestling. I skipped my senior prom to take part in this crazy event but it was super cold 2 years ago (probably around 50 degrees outside). I'd have to say it was worth it! I wrestled a lot of friends and we all threw each other around in the mud. I even slid on my belly like a penguin but no one caught any pictures of me, so these are fantastic shots taken by John H, Matt M, and Jared B. I have a big scratch on my right forearm to prove it : ) Correction: Huzzah I found some pictures of me! :D

This event is called Holi, after the spring festival celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, and others (Wiki article here). We all got hosed off by extremely cold water and took showers, digging twigs and other things out of our swimming suits and hair. This was the best way to de-stress after a long week.

It was interesting because after a hour, everyone was definitely caked with mud and we all looked grey. No matter what skin colour we originally had, we all looked the same. It was really interesting and rewarding to have fun with complete disregard for what people looked like. Any prejudices only came back after we steadily regained colour with the cold hose water. Sometimes you can't help noticing how different people are from you. But sometimes you need to just close your eyes and wallow in peace-bringing mud.

FOTD: My Hair is Like a Transformer

Hi guys :D Lazy Saturday! I couldn't decide what to do with my hair today so I kept changing it. First straight, then curled and up, then down and curly xD I also tried out Michelle Phan's kawaii Disney World inspired eyeliner trick: 3 small dots on the bottom lashline. It reminds me of gyaru eyelashes :3

My hair is super brown now! I like to wear long sleeved shirts with shorts xD It's fun and I don't get cold if my upper body stays toasty. My plan to study failed all day so I just gave up and went to Bubble Tea with Meow Meow.

How was your weekend? ; ) Someone on Formspring asked me whether my hair is fried because of the hair dye. Nope. It's always been like crap and there's nothing I can do to make it behave. I embrace my frizziness! xD

This week, I've also come to embrace my runner's thighs. I hate running long distance but I used to run track. I don't want to be a very frail typical Asian girl. I have big biceps for a girl and I love 'em :D

Sitting Under the Magnolia Tree

I used to despise spring because of allergies and preferred the calm of winter, but now I have really taken to the beautiful flowering trees of April. Yes, I still sneeze and have itchy eyes, a runny nose, and sneeze constantly and uncontrollably, but I still prefer the surging new life in nature over the stillness and cold I once loved. For you people who get by with just Claritin, I envy you. Western medicine does nothing for me xD

There is a gorgeous magnolia tree by the Psychology Building on campus and I freaked out a little and took lots of pictures. I love big blossoms! It was such a windy day so petals were flying everywhere and my hair was blown every which way, hence, no nice headshots.

These pictures were taken a few weeks ago. Now the tree has lost all its flowers and is fully green with leaves. There are more beautiful flowering trees on campus though. It's amazing how things grow so fast and all of a sudden, everything has come to life. Every day of spring is different. I think that's what I like about it. I like change that I can feel day by day. It keeps me on my toes and life is much better than a daily grind.

Warm Spring Hair Colour

My suitemates and I all dyed our hair last week for fun. Totally spontaneous, totally spring. My roomie and I actually biked down to a local grocery store and made tough decisions looking at the multitude of shades and boxes.

I went with Revlon Colorsilk (in 53 Medium Golden Brown) of course. It's cheap (at most $4.00) and dyes dark hair relatively well. The major plus is that it's ammonia-free = no bleach! I left it in for probably 1.5-2 hours (I know, really awful for my scalp), making sure that my hair would turn lighter brown but in fact, my hair never wants to play along and it turned more red than anything. At first, my hair was barely noticeably different but after a week of showering and shampooing, it's been turning lighter brown-red. Yay!

These pictures probably aren't good indicators because my hair is turning lighter brown each day, but now the colour is a lot more even. No more black roots mixed with red/dark brown ends : )

It's pretty much obnoxiously red. I like that word. Obnoxiously.

It's a colour I'm not ashamed to wear at home : ) If you remember my debacle last year, I managed to dye the top half of my head red-orange and the bottom half dark brown. What uber fail. I had to ask my Dad to help me dye it back to dark brown xD

PS: Must ... resist ... urge ... to cut hair short x_x
